Brief History

The Department of History started functioning since the inception of the college in the year 1948 offering intermediate course of the subject under the University of Calcutta. In the year 1957 the Department started B.A. pass course of the subject under the same University. Later on in 1960, the very year of the establishment of the Burdwan University, the college and obviously the department comes under this new University with B.A. pass course in History and one year University Entrance (10H) course of the subject. Two substantive posts were created in 1958 and one more post of the subject was created in 3.6.1998. The Honours course of the Department was started from the academic session of 1995-96. Though the number of sanctioned teaching post for the Department is three, at present the department is managed by two full-time, two part-time teachers and one Guest Teacher.

The Departmental Library started in the year 2007 and now it is well equipped with 369 books (Text and Reference) for the use of the students as well as the teachers. The Department introduced a Wall Magazine named ‘SHILALIPI’ since 2006. The glory of the Department enhanced by the students who stood First Class First in the University Examination. They are Smt. Priyanka Meta and Sri Suman Patra in the years 2010 and 2014 respectively. Recently a Computer has been installed in the Department as audio-visual teaching aid.

  9. Satisfactory results in the University Examinations.
  10. Dr. Gopal Chandra Sinha delivered  Seminar Lectures in other institutions –
    • on 22.09.2011 organised  by the Dept. of  History, Memari College. The topic was – “Some aspects of the Gupta Age”.
    • On 14.01.2015 organised by the Dept. Of History, B.N.Mahavidyalaya, Itachuna, Dist. Hooghly. The topic was “ Feudalism in ancient and early medieval india”.
  11. Smt. Priyanka Meta, student of B.A. History (Hons.) stood First Class First in the University of Burdwan in 2010.
  12. Suman Patra, student of  B.A (History Hons.) stood First Class First in University of Burdwan in 2014.
  13. Gobinda Debnath, student of B.A (History Hons.) competed in the final round of “Inter-College Quiz competition” held at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata.
